Infrared vs. Ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles?

it is better for detecting obstacles in a robot, infrared or ultrasound? I need a complete comparison. What is the distance range of the two?

Ultrasonic rangefinder sensors I built last summer. As someone said above me, the scope is less than 15 feet. The reason being that the sound is a big difference. As reflected by an obstacle, the spread energy of 45 degrees, so that the amount of energy in fact returned to the sensor is much smaller. Also, what works best for flat surfaces, I do not think enough for a robot application. However, if that's all you need is accurate in short distances. Otherwise, use the infrared which are sufficiently cheap, I think.
